7 Warning Signs Your Furnace Is Failing
1. Age Over 15-20 Years
The average gas furnace lasts 15-20 years. If yours is in this range, it is entering the danger zone. Parts become harder to find, efficiency drops significantly, and the risk of complete failure rises sharply.
2. Repeated Repair Calls
One repair is normal. Multiple repairs in 1-2 years is a sign the furnace is failing systemically. When repair costs approach 50% of replacement cost, replacement is the smarter financial decision.
3. Strange Noises
Banging (delayed ignition), rattling (loose components), screeching (blower bearing failure), or popping (ductwork stress) are all signs of mechanical problems that will worsen over time.
4. Yellow or Flickering Pilot Light
A healthy furnace flame is blue. Yellow or flickering flames can indicate incomplete combustion and a possible carbon monoxide risk. Do not ignore this - call immediately.
5. Rising Gas Bills
If your gas bills are climbing but your usage habits are the same, your furnace is losing efficiency. An aging furnace burns more fuel to produce the same amount of heat.
6. Uneven Heating
Some rooms cold while others are warm? A failing furnace cannot distribute heat evenly. This gets worse over time until the furnace stops heating altogether.
7. Frequent Cycling
If your furnace turns on and off frequently without completing a full heat cycle, it is short-cycling. This strains the system and dramatically shortens its remaining lifespan.
